John's career has spanned 16 years so far and has so far been extremely varied and diverse.
John studied for an academic degree at Colchester Institute and achieved a BA(Hons) in 1988. He was first study violin, with singing a very close second. During his time at Colchester he also studied conducting (an activity he had witnessed first hand from childhood with his father, a highly respected amateur choral conductor in East Anglia).
Having left college on Friday 24 th June, he started work on the following Monday at the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, initially as librarian for their new Pops orchestra but within a few weeks was also Personnel Manager/Fixer. John ‘cross-pollonated' with the main orchestra extensively and recalls with some dread a three month period of sick cover where he ended up fixing the RPO and the Pops, while managing to run the Pops library as well.
It was during these very happy 6 years at the RPO that he established many professional relationships that would prove to have lasting longevity and significance. Most notably with Jose Carreras for whom John came to be his orchestra librarian for all his gala shows worldwide, a role John has fulfilled for the past 13 years. During these years he had extensive contact with Henry Mancini, Kiri Te Kanawa, Placido Domingo, Montserrat Caballe, Itzahk Perlman, Paul Tortelier, Willard White, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Ron Goodwin, Sarah Brightman, Michael Ball, Dave Willetts, Maurice Jarre, George Benson, Stevie Wonder, Carl Davis, George Fenton, Mike Batt and Sir Yehudi Menhuin.
John left the RPO to become events manager for concert impresario Raymond Gubbay Ltd. He remained in this job for 18 months before spring boarding into a freelance career as a singer and music-copyist which is what he has been doing for the eight years since then.
John's solo singing activities have taken him from film session to touring show, from Glasgow Royal Concert Hall to the Gulf Hotel Bahrain, from Birmingham Syomphony Hall to Royal Albert Hall and west end lead credits in Phantom of the opera and Whistle down the wind .
In tandem with a hectic sinigng career John's music preparation and arranging activities have brought him into contact with a huge diversity of projects and different musical styles including transposing theatre songs for students and professionals, music copying regularly for the Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic and Philharmonia Orchestras, transcribing all the songs for the Pet Shop Boys musical Closer to heaven and Lloyd Webber's Bollywood west end hit Bombay Dreams , doing all music preparation for the London Symphony Orchestra for Lorin Maazel's Empty Pot at the Barbican and also on the Sentimento CD with Andrea Bocelli, preparing all the orchestra music for George Fenton's Blue Planet Live! world tour and arranging and preparing all music for Hayley Westenra's Spring 2004 world Pure tour. John is currently working on a 3 year project with american conductor/composer Lorin Maazel on his full scale opera 1984 which has its debut at the Royal Opera House in 2005.
John continues to look after all the music for Jose Carreras and more recently Hayley Westenra, and is extensively involved with organising music for Bryn Terfel, Michael Ball, Sarah Brightman and Willard White.
Over the last three years John has become increasingly involved with arranging/orchestrating and has had his music performed all over the world, most notably by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, All Souls Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, US gospel singer Crystal Lewis and most recently Hayley Westenra.
John is married to Heidi and lives in West London.
